10 November 2003: Aquariums with Turtles!

Dear Dalton,

Being the Premier must be very stressful. I have a stress relief suggestion. The Giant Ocean Tank exhibit at the New England Aquarium in Boston has a webcam, located at http://dsc.discovery.com/cams/sharkvideo.html. You can see many types of fish and often stingrays, sharks, lots of turtles, and the occasional diver. The other day I was watching and a diver came right up to the camera and waved at me. Isn't that wonderful? Mostly, though, I like to watch the turtles. I have often seen turtles on the side of Ontario's many dirt roads, and they have always seemed to be slow lumbering animals that are somewhat clumsy. However, in the water they are quite graceful. Their shape suddenly makes sense somehow, and they have proven to be quite curious animals. I have seen them spend at least half an hour inspecting the equipment around the video camera, touching and tasting the bars in an attempt to figure them out. I have become quite fond of them, and when I get stressed out with schoolwork, I turn to the Discovery Cam and enjoy watching the turtles and their simple happy lives. You will be happy to learn that you are able to control the webcam from your computer, if you are patient and wait in the queue. You can move it from side to side and up and down, as well as adjusting focus and zoom level. Please don't move it too far to the side though, because then all we can see is the wall, and this is frustrating for those of us who are not driving the camera. You wouldn't want your citizens to be unhappy, would you Dalton? I thought not. So please go easy on the side-to-side movement of the webcam.

Yours in the effort to eradicate stress,

Heather Ann Kaldeway

P.S. Dear letter opener, did you know that the black spot on the end of bananas used to have a flower there?
