Damn Straight: 13 May 2003

Yesterday I read an interview with Frederick Buechner, who is a prominent Presbyterian/Episcopalian fiction writer, about as influential as CS Lewis in that sphere. I had to laugh though, because in the middle of the interview, he said "Who gives a shit about my life?" and later when they were asking him whether he thinks clergy identify with what he's saying when he attacks the organization of the church, he said "damn straight!" He was very down-to-earth and you get the idea that he would be one of those 75-year-old gentlemen who pull a lot of pranks and are a lot of fun to know. I love it that he's lauded as a major theological influence in evangelical circles and he's not afraid to swear in interviews. Heck, Christian bands get nailed for that all the time, but Buechner is untouchable.
