graffiti on queen west

There's an alley just south of Queen Street West that runs all the way from Spadina and Bathurst where graffiti is not only allowed, but encouraged. They had a graffiti festival a few weeks ago, so a lot of artists came in and put new art up, and I got some shots of it today. Graffiti always makes me feel my white-girl middle-class heritage keenly, but I can't help but be amazed by it, especially when confronted by works like these.

Hannie, the pictures don't show up when I click on them. I get the flicker site but X for pictures.
Kaldy...
Sorry, when I went back to your site the pics were there - like magic!

That's some really cool stuff; I'll have to take a look in person.
Around my apartment, they've given artists permission to paint some utility boxes (Bell boxes perhaps? I'm not sure of the details). Anyway, they're really cool looking too.
Julian told me they're hoping that they're hoping that if GOOD artists paint on them and make them look cool, it will prevent taggers and others from writing/drawing all sorts of crap on them.
(Apparently there's a rule on the street that people don't paint over other people's graffiti... but unfortunately one tagger has already ruined one on Lisgar. Sigh.)
The new series of graf is part of the "Style in Progress" project.

Michael's Way: Good to know! I added a link to the Style in Progress site to the descriptions on all the photos. :)
Meredi: Yeah, they've done that on a few of the phone boxes near here too, including the one just outside of Chris's building. I like them a lot!
